We are looking for a talented Combustion, Performance, & Emissions (CPE) Engineercandidate to join our team specializing in Thermal and Fluid Systems Engineering for our Corporate Business in Columbus, IN and/or your remote home office.

In this early career role as a Combustion, Performance, & Emissions (CPE) Engineer you will develop engine performance hardware and calibration strategies to meet system requirements by balancing system cost; global emission requirements; power and transient performance and operating costs.

As a Combustion, Performance, & Emissions (CPE) Engineer, you will:

  • Investigate product, system and/or technology problems that are related to thermal and fluid sciences, understanding causal mechanisms, recommending appropriate action, owning problem resolution, and documenting results.

  • Simulate engine and system level performance to optimize fuel system, air-handling, combustion, and after-treatment hardware in early development stages.

  • Support engine build, instrumentation, and test readiness.

  • Manage engine testing, data collection and processing for steady-state, transient, cold, simulated altitude, and emissions certification.

  • Troubleshoot test issues and ensure data quality.

  • Conduct simulation and hardware-in-loop testing to evaluate off-nominal (high altitude, cold, hot, etc.) conditions and validate various customer use cases.

  • Analyze data to make decisions, validate requirements, set optimal controls settings, and certify engines and performance systems.

Use tools related to thermal and fluid sciences such as:

  • Engine dynamometer and vehicle testing

  • GT-Suite (Thermodynamic modeling)

  • AVL Boost (After-treatment modeling)

  • Hardware in the loop testing

  • MATLAB

  • Simulink

  • modeFRONTIER (System optimization software)

You will make an impact by:

  • Applying your knowledge of engineering fundamentals principles, fluid dynamics and heat transfer

  • Applying the principles of thermodynamics and energy conversion systems

  • Working within a broader team to deliver product which meets customer requirements.

  • Working with test technicians to resolve test related issues.

  • Developing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • A College, University or equivalent Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field.

  • A postgraduate (Master’s or PhD) degree may be required for select Combustion Performance and Emissions Engineer roles.

  • Good communication skills along with strengths in logic and planning

  • Good project management skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Office tools or equivalents, especially Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

Qualifications

Degree Programs Considered: Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD

Major Programs Typically Considered: All Engineering Majors

Cummins Full Time Requirements:

  • College, university or equivalent technical experience required

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA or above required

  • Must be able to complete 40 hours per week

  • 0-2 years in a position/internship relating to your field of study preferred

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
