Placement - Customer Engineering

We run an exciting 12 month placement where you are given an opportunity to work in a role and on real projects making a difference in both your team and the company as a whole. You will receive on the job training and take part in a structured Training & Development Programme designed to give the skills and competencies required for future graduate roles.

The role of Power Systems Customer Engineering Placement will be to follow our IQA process (engine selection, design review and installation review) for those customers using our engines in their generating sets.

  • Undertake “Engine Selections” for customers, helping to pick the correct engine model and set of options to tailor the engine for a specific application.

  • Undertake “Design Reviews” for customer applications to verify the correct installation of the engine and interface for the engine sub-systems (cooling, starting, fuel, mounting, air intake, etc).

  • Undertake “Installation Reviews” for customer applications as the final stage of the IQA (installation quality assurance). Use a mix of calculation, inspection and test to validate the correct installation and operation of the engine. Use electronic service tools to configure electronic features on the engine and optimise performance.

  • Support our UK and European customer base, working on customer enquiries and requests for technical support.

  • Develop our documentation systems to ensure that all templates are up to date and use appropriate macros, standard paragraphs and other features.

  • Support any fault finding and trouble-shooting visits with appropriate support from our experienced Application Engineers.

  • Provide assistance for our Application Engineers and Technical Specialists and receive appropriate coaching from them.

  • Some level of business travel within UK and/or Europe is envisaged.

  • An interest in and understanding of diesel engines and/or gensets

  • Practical experience with electro-mechanical machines or automotive applications

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with internal teams and external customers.

  • Experience of technical report writing and presentations

  • Language skills in Spanish, Italian or another 2 nd European language would be beneficial


College, university, or equivalent degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related subject required.

The role will provide excellent experience for your CV and an introduction to a Customer Engineering role in industry. A mentor will be there to guide you through your placement year. The following training will be provided;

  • Training in Corporate systems such as CARS, COLS, Concur, and familiarisation with Cummins service tool software (such asInPower, InSite, etc)

  • Coaching to enable the development of other business and technical skills.

  • 4 x 1 day workshops through an external training provider: Adapting to Professional Environments, Effective Communication and Presentation Skills, Team Work, Customer Care

  • Internal Placement and Graduate Networks
